Sanctuary for All
A social impact campaign creating a versatile visual identity that acts as a beacon of refuge — as recognizable on a protest sign as on a window sticker or digital asset.
A Light in the Window
Sanctuary for All is a social impact campaign dedicated to high-visibility advocacy and community safety. The goal was to create a versatile visual identity that could serve as a "beacon" — a recognizable symbol of refuge that works as effectively on a protest sign as it does on a window sticker or digital asset.
By combining historical symbolism with a modern, scalable aesthetic, this project provides a tangible way for individuals to signal their commitment to inclusion and protection within their local communities.
From Candle to Spark
The design process began with the concept of a "light in the window," a gesture of hospitality shared across many cultures. I was specifically inspired by the Irish tradition of placing a candle in the window to signal a safe haven for travelers, as well as Anne Frank's reflection: "Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness."
My early drafts focused on a literal candle to ground the project in these historical roots. However, to ensure the design met the modern needs of a social campaign, I transitioned to a bold, matchstick-inspired spark. This distillation allowed the warmth of the glow to remain the focal point while providing the clean lines necessary for professional print production. The final terracotta and cream palette was chosen to feel earthy and welcoming, steering away from traditional warning colors to emphasize sanctuary and peace.
A Recognizable Symbol
The final design establishes a bold, recognizable symbol for the Sanctuary for All campaign, reinforcing the message of safety and mutual protection. By prioritizing versatility across various print and digital formats, the project provides community members with a tangible tool to express their values, encourage inclusion, and signal a clear welcome to all.
