POSTCARD FROM MAROPATI

Handcrafted Culture

I wanted this postcard to represent the culture of Maropati locally through one of Calabria's most beloved traditions: pasta. Lasagne (the grandfather of lasagna) is a local pasta in the Calabria region, and I knew it would be the perfect medium to create something truly unique.

Rather than using typography or illustration, I decided to make the pasta from scratch in my own kitchen. I created each letter of "Maropati, Italy" using just my hands, skill, and determination—forming the letterforms entirely by hand with fresh pasta dough.

From Dough to Design

I photographed the pasta spelling out "Maropati, Italy" on my kitchen counter using a DSLR Nikon camera, documenting the entire process from mixing the dough to forming each individual letter.

This hands-on approach connects the design directly to the cultural traditions of the region. The imperfect, organic quality of the hand-formed pasta letters adds authenticity and warmth—it's typography you can almost taste.

The final postcard celebrates both the craft of pasta-making and the importance of food culture in Italian identity, turning a culinary tradition into a visual message.
